TEW Galleries History

While Timothy was living in Paris from 1986 to 1987 studying Art History, Drawing and French he befriended a handful of talented artists. In an effort to maintain the connection with them, and with France, he proposed the idea of developing a market for their work in the United States. On his return he wasted no time and started in the art business by literally selling paintings to interior designers from the trunk of his car.
The original Galerie Timothy Tew came into being when the opportunity arose to set up an office and exhibit paintings in a Buckhead restaurant, Café Les Artistes. In 1989 Timothy moved on, and opened his first gallery in a very small space at the TULA Art Center on Bennett Street. Two years later he expanded the gallery to 900 square feet.
Over the next few years Timothy added several exceptional artists from the United States, England and Germany, many of whom are still represented by TEW. In 1996 the gallery moved to East Paces Ferry Road which would be home for the next ten years. During this time Timothy added his first staff; and in 2002, doubled the exhibition space to 3,600 square feet.
In 2003 several Atlanta gallery owners got together to form the Atlanta Gallery Association with the goal of raising the profile of visual arts in the city. The association created ATLart(04), which debuted in January of 2004. For two years Timothy served as president and led in the planning, marketing and raising of money for the event. ATLart has since become an annual city wide affair supported by all the major galleries in Atlanta and continues to grow.
In 2005 TEW Galleries moved into a building it purchased in The Galleries of Peachtree Hills adjacent to ADAC. The center is recognized as Atlanta's finest shopping district and features over thirty art and antique galleries and stores serving the design market. The interior architecture of TEW's three story town home is distinctly cosmopolitan yet comfortable and accessible to artists and collectors alike.
In 2007 TEW Galleries proudly celebrates twenty years in business and Timothy is laying the foundation for the next phase of growth. By continuing to focus on the development of uniquely accomplished career artists and on the regular introduction of powerful new talent, the gallery is laying the groundwork for Atlanta's emergence as a city noted for the quality of its visual arts. In addition to a strong roster of artists who have warranted long term representation, the gallery has begun to attract high profile international talent.
The staff includes Jules Bekker, director, Corky Davis, sales director, and associates Sara Zipperer and Carolyn Kreimer.
